Should married couples play doubles together?

Join us to find out the answer on Thursday, November 3, when the Gladstone Theatre presents Rideau Sports Centre Night at the new tennis-themed comedy Mixed Doubles by Ottawa playwright and self-confessed tennis hack Kate Jaimet.

The characters in the play will be familiar to many of us from our own experience. There’s Chandra, the 22-year-old head of the tennis club’s fundraising committee, desperately trying to amass enough donations to fix a leak in the roof before the city building inspector shuts the clubhouse down. There’s Grit, the crusty club manager with a heart of gold. There’s Barry, the aging ace looking for a younger partner to up his doubles game. And there’s Barry’s long-suffering wife Barb, who may have finally found a way to get even with her philandering husband.

It’s all rolled up into a ninety-minute romp through the follies and foibles of men and women, Boomers and Gen-Z’s, sticklers and cheaters — but in the end, no-one plays by the rules in this madcap 21st-century farce!

For those of us sadly storing away our rackets at the end of the outdoor season — or already scheduling our matches in the bubble — this play by local theatre troupe Bear & Co. is a great send-off to summer.
