Meet our instructors:
No stranger to the fitness industry, Sylvia Picciano boasts a long relationship with water, fitness and yoga. Sylvia began her yoga practice by attending yoga retreats with her mom as a child. While her mom continued with yoga, Sylvia grew to love swimming and all forms of exercise related to the water. She began teaching aqua fitness when she was 15 years old – by mistake. An instructor failed to show up and Sylvia was literally thrown into the water. This began a love affair that has yet to end. Given this opportunity, Sylvia grew to respect and to appreciate the holistic properties of moving in the water, the freedom granted to mobility, the fluidity of movement as well as the strength afforded to the body given the buoyancy and hydro-static elements of the water.
Over the years, Sylvia has acquired a number of fitness certifications, including AEA, Speedo, CALA as well as Yoga Instructor Certification through the Canadian Yoga Alliance. Sylvia maintains her specializations in Pre- and Post-natal Aqua, Healing Waters Aqua, Older Adult Aqua , Aqua Arthritis, Aqua Yoga, Hatha and Restorative Yoga, Exercise Mobility/Accessibility and most recently completed fitness training at the Canadian Center for Activity and Aging. As well as her Aqua Fitness, Yoga and General Fitness Certifications, Sylvia holds a BA in Psychology, a BA in Music, a Bachelor of Education and a Master’s in Education with a specialization in Adult Education as well as Curriculum Design. These degrees led Sylvia to coordinate a number of programs at Algonquin College, including the Fitness and Lifestyle Management Certification Program, The Trauma and Addictions Recovery Certificate Program and the Crisis Management, Human Psychology Certificate Program. As well, she acted as a college liaison for some 20 years. Currently, Sylvia facilitates Abnormal Psychology on line touching some 1200 students/year. Sylvia’s passions include a strong belief in the healing properties of movement, yoga, exercising in the water, singing and her family!
Bianca’s passion for aqua fitness stems from her mom’s influence. Having watched her mom teach this form of fitness her whole life, it was no surprise that at just 15 she chose to formalize her certification. Certified with CALA and having taught for both the City of Ottawa and the Ottawa Athletic Club for the past 7 years, she is excited to be joining the RSC aqua team!
Bianca has a background in spirituality, having completed her BA in Theology with a minor in Conflict Studies at Saint Paul University, where she is also currently enrolled in her Masters of Divinity. As a 4th Degree Black Belt and Taekwondo Master (Master Bianca), she wholly believes in an integrated and holistic approach to fitness as she teaches.
