Message from Nicki Bridgland CEO & Founder
Monday’s Provincial announcement of Stage 3 was the happiest day since we temporarily closed our doors on March 16th due to COVID-19. Effective tomorrow Friday, July 17th, RSC is delighted to have so many of our services included in the list of allowable activities; organized team sports, indoor restaurant, expanded children’s programs – plus increased gathering sizes of 100 outdoors, plus 50 indoors. We will be rolling out various services in a phased and careful approach, ensuring that all the safety protocols are in place. For now, we will only be re-opening the 1st floor of the RSC Building for indoor restaurant, washrooms, and the upstairs Yoga Studio. Fitness Centre and Change rooms / Showers will be opened at a later date. All of this re-opening activity means that RSC can return to being the Community Hub that everyone has come to love, while maintaining our “physical distancing” protocols. In this issue, you’ll see all that we’ve added to “Ottawa’s Downtown Playground” – to make this summer fabulous together with you!

Pool Update: Good News for Pool Booking
RSC’s Pool is the oasis on our 4-acre property, and we want to make it extra relaxing and easy for you.
We heard your feedback, and we are making significant changes to the Pool Reservation system…to make it better for everyone!
- 8-day Advance Booking: Pool & Tennis Pass Holders now have 8-day advance booking for a pool reservation, giving you priority booking privileges. Drop-in’s can now only book 3 days in advance.
- Maximum Capacity: With Monday’s Provincial announcement of Stage 3, we are able to increase the pool capacity to 30 maximum as of Friday, July 17th. This opens up more spaces in the pool to reserve each time slot. It is everyone’s shared responsibility to continue physical distancing.
- Self-Cancellation: You are now able to cancel your pool booking online. We would appreciate 12 hours notice, so that it can be made available for someone else. Uncancelled bookings with no-shows will be recorded, which may have an impact/penalty on future bookings.
- Time Slot: We will continue to evaluate whether we change the 2-hour pool booking to 60-or-90-minute booking. This would help maximize spots available for swims. Stay tuned!
We appreciate your patience during our new COVID maximum protocols. We have been working hard with our technology developers to make these changes, based on staff/client ideas. Thanks again for caring enough to send along your suggestions – sharing ideas is how we all get better at what we do!

CHILDREN SUMMER PROGRAM
NEW MULTI-SPORT HALF-DAY PROGRAMS: RESERVE YOUR SPOT TODAY
With the recent announcement of Stage 3, we are allowed to increase RSC’s children’s group sizes and length of programming. We wanted to reach out to all the families that have been with us in the past and present to get their feedback on comfort levels with COVID-19.
After listening your survey feedback and carefully considering all the options, we have made the decision to run a NEW Half Day Multi-Sport Program for 3 different age groups (Junior, Senior, Youth) in the morning and afternoon.
The Half-Day Multi-Sport Program will consist of a different sport-focus each day of the week. We plan to make use of the Beach Volleyball Courts, Ball Hockey Rinks, surrounding Greenspace and our double-insulated Multi-Sport dome. Our preference is to have the participants outdoors as much as possible, however it is important to note that if we are experiencing extreme heat or rain, programming will be taking place in the dome. Children have the opportunity to learn new sports, games, and skills.
We chose to do Half-Day and 90-minute Programs, instead of our usual Full-Day Camps for August 2020 because we wanted to reduce the “high risk” times for contact – snack time, nap time, lunch time, and multiple bathroom visits.
- Program capacity will be 15 children (increased from 8 children, as per Phase 3 Provincial Guidelines).
- There will be 3 Program Leaders per program. 1 Program Leader per 5 children.
- There will be a sanitization period before/after every program for each piece of equipment used.
- Physical distancing will be enforced by the Program Leaders during pickup, drop-off and program time.
Here are the August Half-Day Multi-Sport Programs:
Multi-Sport Junior (Ages 5-7) – 9:30am to 12:00pm (click here to reserve your spot)
Multi-Sport Junior (Ages 5-7) – 1:30pm to 4:00pm (click here to reserve your spot)
Multi-Sport Senior (Ages 8-10) – 9:30am to 12:00pm (click here to reserve your spot)

We recognize that your free-time as parents is crucial to your well-being … especially this summer where you’ve had so much on your plate, and very little time to yourself. So we have some ideas for what you can do at RSC while your children are in the Programs:
- Purchase a coffee or snack form our Front Desk, and sit down on our beautiful 4-acre property to read/work (with free wifi)
- Take an outdoor yoga class on our Upper Deck (click here to view schedule)
- Take a private 30-minute swim lesson with one of our instructors (click here to book a private swim lesson)
- Relax in our outdoor pool during open swim times (click here to book reserve your pool time!)
- Join a fitness class! (click here to register for a Fitness Class, August programs coming soon!)

If you want your child(ren) to stay at RSC for the full day, they can sign-up for the morning and afternoon program. During the 1.5 hour break in between Programs, you and your child(ren) can:
- Go for a swim during open swim (click here to book reserve your time slot!)
- Enjoy lunch at The Bridge Public House – take-out a picnic along the Rideau River, eat on our patio or cool-off with air conditioning in our restaurant! Children’s food options are available. (Click here to view the full menu online)
Kidz Skillz Drillz & Thrillz In July: A Few Spots Remain!
Our new “Kidz Skillz Drillz & Thrillz” programs have been extremely successful, and we’ve enjoyed seeing all of the children on our Ball Hockey Rinks, Tennis Courts and New Beach Volleyball Courts! The program provides 90 minutes of instruction time for each specific sport (Tennis, Sand Soccer, Ball Hockey, and Beach Volleyball) through drills and mini-games to encourage skill development in a fun, but safe environment!

LIVE MUSIC RETURNING TO RSC UPPER DECK EVERY WEDNESDAY NIGHT!
Wednesday, July 22 6:30-9:00pm: Jeff DeValk
We are delighted to be returning to our regular Wednesday Live Music on the Upper Deck (overlooking the Rideau River). Our first musical artist will be Jeff DeValk on Wednesday, July 22nd 6:30-9:00pm.
Jeff deValk calls Overbrook home but grew up north of Toronto listening to his dad’s reel-to-reel mixtapes, records and eight-tracks and singing in the church choir. At 13 he discovered his mother’s dusty guitar hidden in the back of a closet and hasn’t put it down since. Since moving to Ottawa in 2008, he has been involved in many different groups including the seven-piece soul band he leads called the Hornettes, and Little Bones, Ottawa’s original Tragically Hip tribute act. Jeff is currently writing and recording a long-overdue solo record influenced by the classic rock, gospel hymns, and old soul music he was raised on.
