I wear many hats; a mom of 3, a wife, a daughter, a sister, yoga instructor, Birth Doula, Youth Mental Health coordinator, RSC Yoga Studio Manager, and so on. I’ve been an athlete most of my life, I discovered Yoga in 2004 and haven’t looked back.
I have always had a passion for helping people. I started teaching Yoga to children in 2008 with just my intuition to guide those teachings. In 2009 I attended my first yoga teacher training, and started to teach a bit more seriously. I have completed a 235hr YTT, 3-25hr YTT and have recently been accepted to a school in San Diego to become certified as a Youth Yoga Therapist.
I specialize in my own version of restorative yoga classes, prenatal and children’s yoga which I largely teach within the school system. My ability to make Yoga accessible and inviting to all is something I have become quite proud of.
I truly believe that Yoga is a practice, it is a living experiment that you can feel, accept, adjust and keep playing with. The practice you build while on the mat carries with you off the mat in many subtle ways.
My classes are rooted in optimal mobility with my own unique balance of playful and soulful gratitude woven in to my teaching. I love to teach private or semi-private classes and often use the Yoga philosophy as a tool in many avenues in my life. I have begun to develop more opportunities to explore Yoga at a deeper level with retreats, workshops and online resources.
Teaching children how to be mindful and to move their bodies in confidence and pay attention to their breath is one of the gifts I get to share. Increasing opportunities to develop self-esteem, self-regulation, vestibular systems and proprioceptive feedback and growth mindset are some of the area’s I focus on. Through teaching I’ve been an advocate for Youth mental health and hold a position as Youth Mental Health coordinator for a Not-For-Profit on the Quebec side. Being so active in the youth community has enriched my practice and my teachings. I often am inspired to bring the wisdom of the youth I teach back to my Yoga students who are no longer considered Youth by the standard definition.
With my passion for wellness and strong intuition it felt very natural to be educated and trained as a Doula. I realize how sacred and intimate it is to be carrying a new life, and how scary it can be. In 2010 I started as a volunteer for a birth companion program and my passion was ignited. I offer consistent, balanced and reliable emotional support. I foster informed choices with my clients and their family and help navigate the ebbs and flows of pre-natal, birth and post-partum time. Birth is a time when the importance of breath, the mind body relationship and ability to be in the present moment are at the peak of importance. Becoming aware of those systems and how they work in our own uniqueness, is Yoga.
The experiment of a mindful yoga practice, creates space for the experiment of a mindful life practice as well. I will always continue to grow and explore ways to share yoga with the world.
I look forward to seeing you on the mat at RSC Yoga Studio Wednesdays at 9:45am and 12:15pm.

Ottawa musicians KJ Thomas and Jim McDowell make up the duo of Tulips and Devilships. Songs hit all over the map from sweet and introspective, to quirky and fun. Familiar tunes will hit you with nostalgia, while original songs will unfold for you new stories and melodies to love. KJ and Jim let the room predict how the music gets played- easy listening, dancing, sing-along- whatever the show brings, you’ll be sure to enjoy a good time!
Friday, March 29: Jeff de Valk
Jeff deValk calls Overbrook home but grew up north of Toronto listening to his dad’s reel-to-reel mixtapes, records and eight-tracks and singing in the church choir. At 13 he discovered his mother’s dusty guitar hidden in the back of a closet and hasn’t put it down since. Since moving to Ottawa in 2008, he has been involved in many different groups including the seven-piece soul band he leads called the Hornettes, and Little Bones, Ottawa’s original Tragically Hip tribute act. Jeff is currently writing and recording a long-overdue solo record influenced by the classic rock, gospel hymns, and old soul music he was raised on.
